81 Canadian 240 GLT manual. Only found two spots of rust so far, door and a small piece on the windscreen. Got it cheap. More awful photos to come.

Time to start firing the parts cannon at it! Have you ordered a 740 in-tank pump and new vacuum lines yet?

It needs brakes and some suspension work. I know it needs tie rods and maybe ball joints. The rear diff fluid needs changed badly since I can smell it after driving it a few miles. Everything works including factory radio.
What’s up with the fuel pump thing.

What brought this on, project or necessity?

I guess project? I don’t plan on modifying or restoring the car but there is a lot to fix. I have some experience with K-Jet having it on a few Beetles. There is blow by and I need to do a leak down/compression test to see if it needs a rebuild. I’m thinking ~$2500 to get it truly road worthy again. I got it really cheap so that sounds pretty reasonable.
I understand your question. People buy these thinking they are reliable like a Camry. They can be but it takes maintenance and noticing small problems before they become bigger. I mean this one has 428,000 km but it also has a 2 inch stack of service records. Luckily I’m in Portland once or twice a month so I will be visiting IPD more.

Another 240(just gave our 4th wagon to my brother rather than not drive it) is on my wife's wishlist. She wants a nicer one than the 350k mile one we just have away

Heh, heh, I had no illusions about this being a Camry at this age. I just know sometimes you need a cheap car, and if it’s interest more’s the better.
I hope you’ve found all the rust. Looking forward to updates.

Cool, the old Halifax plant is about an hour from me in...Halifax. :P
The plant building still stands and was repurposed into a crapton of different businesses/fabricators....real estate, LED streetlights, Office asset management...

I’ve always wanted one and I was in the right place right time. I daily a 47 year old car which means I have high hopes for a relatively new 39 year old car.

I don’t know how far I am going to take it. I am going to get it accelerating, steering, and stopping safely and see where I want to go. I already have a LS drivetrain sitting in the shop if it comes to that.

It’s a common upgrade for 240 owners to swap in the 740's higher-flow pump when the in-tank unit dies. Some people don’t replace it but it eats up the main pump faster. You’ll need to cut a bit off the sending unit but it’s fairly straight-forward assuming you don’t damage a fuel line like I did. Of course, you may find that other parts of the system need work too after jacking up the pressure...
Clean Flame Trap has a simple test you can run with a paper clip: http://cleanflametrap.com/transferPump.htm
Suspension’s on the menu for mine once I get the mechanicals sorted.

I was threatening to diesel swap the one we gave away. My wallet(and wife) both could not agree with my plan...

I DD my 85 Jaguar whenever the weather is decent (because it already had more rust than I’d really like). I bought it 2.5 years ago and have done belts, hoses and brakes myself. I had some transmission work done ($$$) and a new floor put in the passenger side ($$$) and just a little engine work (Surprisingly cheap). For a 35 year old notoriously unreliable car it’s been very good and I really love driving it and have logged about 15k miles on it so far.
